The Face of YAHWEH

Searching for Wisdom?

Seek YAHWEH
and His strength;
Seek His presence continually.

1 Chronicles 16.11

 If My people,
 who are called
 by My name,
 shall humble themselves
and pray,
 and seek My presence,
and turn from
 their wicked ways
 then I will hear
from Heaven,
and will forgive their sin,
and will heal their land.

2 Chronicles 7.14

Believers and non-believers alike are called to come "before the face" of YAHWEH. We are encouraged to "seek His face". Yet many have no idea what this means. The concept of being before the face of YAHWEH actually refers to being in His very presence - to encountering Him "face-to-face", so to speak.

There are numerous Scripture verses that speak about this, some rather indirectly. It's not possible to cover them all in this article but a sampling of them is provided to help you grasp the concept.

As you review them you'll note that some of the connotations are not pleasant ones. Your relationship with YAHWEH, whether you believe in Him or do not, seriously affects your experience when you are "before His face" - in His presence. Read on. Then decide which situation you prefer to find yourself in.

The Hebrew term that’s typically translated as “face” is paniym. Here is James Strong’s definition of the term:

6440. MˆynÚDp paniym, paw-neem´; plural (but always as singular) of an unused noun (h‰nÚDp paneh, paw-neh´; from 6437); the face (as the part that turns); used in a great variety of applications (literally and figuratively); also (with prepositional prefix) as a preposition (before, etc.):
—+ accept, a-(be-)fore(-time), against, anger, x as (long as), at, + battle, + because (of), + beseech, countenance, edge, + employ, endure, + enquire, face, favour, fear of, for, forefront(-part), form(-er time, -ward), from, front, heaviness, x him(-self), + honourable, + impudent, + in, it, look(-eth) (-s), x me, + meet, x more than, mouth, of, off, (of) old (time), x on, open, + out of, over against, the partial, person, + please, presence, propect, was purposed, by reason of, + regard, right forth, + serve, x shewbread, sight, state, straight, + street, x thee, x them(-selves), through (+ -out), till, time(-s) past, (un-)to(-ward), + upon, upside (+ down), with(-in, + -stand), x ye, x you.

6437. hÎnÚDp panah, paw-naw´; a primitive root; to turn; by implication, to face, i.e. appear, look, etc.:
—appear, at (even-)tide, behold, cast out, come on, x corner, dawning, empty, go away, lie, look, mark, pass away, prepare, regard, (have) respect (to), (re-)turn (aside, away, back, face, self), x right (early).

In order to comprehend what Scripture intends with this term it’s important to understand what the Hebrews understood the face to represent. When one saw the face of another it meant they were “in the presence” of that person. It was not merely a matter of looking at their physical face. When they “faced” someone they entered into the full experience of the presence of that person.

This is in contrast to our Western ways of thinking in which we don’t give a thought to “entering into the presence of another’s life”. We simply “face” them - look at them. We “face” a lot of people, but we rarely enter into their “presence”. We treat them more as an “object”. The Hebrews treated them as a vital life force with all of their individual character and significance.

This was especially true in one’s relationship with YAHWEH. What we often fail to consider is that no one has actually ever seen the “face” of YAHWEH and lived. The following Scripture passages verify this.

Ex. 33:23 then I will take away my hand, and you will see My back; but My face will not be seen.”

John 1:18 No man has seen YAHWEH at any time.

Therefore we must recognize that whenever Scripture talks about the “face of YAHWEH” it is always referring to His presence. And since it represents His presence, to the Hebrew mind it also meant that His very nature, His character, and His authority were also “present”. For them, even the mention of His name represented His actual “presence” with them. It was as if He was standing right in front of them, as if they were face-to-face.

With these things in mind you're invited to review what His Word says about His “face”. The term, “face”, is a vital concept in Scripture. It’s used over and over. It establishes a “connection” between various passages. While it does indeed represent His “presence”, it’s important to use the term as it occurs in the Hebrew text. There are many places where the Hebrews used repetition as a rhetorical device to add emphasis to the text. Many of them also figure into word plays that occur frequently in the Hebrew text but which are usually not seen in the English translations.

Here are some Scriptures that will enable you to discover what a reference to the face of YAHWEH means.
The use of the aleph-tau
את letter combination is of very great significance. Please be sure to read the article on this site about The Aleph-Tau for more complete information.

Exodus 3.6:  Moreover He said, I am The Elohim of your father, The Elohim of Abraham, The Elohim of Yitzhak, and The Elohim of Ya’akob. And Moshe hid his face; for he was afraid to look upon YAHWEH

Exodus 33.11:  And YAHWEH spoke to Moshe face to face (a euphemism meaning presence to presence - a direct encounter), as a man speaks to his companion. (S4S Version)

Exodus 33.17-23:  And YAHWEH said to Moshe,
Even this word itself  את which you have spoken
I will do, because you have found favor in My eyes,
and I know you by name.”

No other person in Scripture is identified as being "known by name", personally, by YAHWEH. This has now been repeated for us, confirming this matter. For YAHWEH to state that He knows Moshe "by name" means He knows His character, his reputation, and everything there is to know about him.

33.18 Then he said, “Please, let me see Your splendor itself.” את
33.19 And He said,“I Myself will cause all My goodness to pass over in front of you.
And I will call out by Name,
YAHWEH, to your face.
And I will show favor to he himself
את whom I favor.

And I will have compassion on he himself on whom את I will have compassion.”

Once again the concept of "pass over" is presented to us. YAHWEH will "pass over" Moshe - in fulness of compassion, and with great favor shown, because Moshe is a human being also, regardless of his closeness to YAHWEH. This special revelation to Moshe is unique in all of Scripture. no one else is identified as having this kind of experience.
Moshe was privileged to have "all the goodness of
YAHWEH" pass over before his face. Astonishing!
And
YAHWEH would speak (call out or proclaim) His very own personal name to Moshe, to his face!
No other human being is identified with this privilege in Scripture.
And lest we miss the significance of this event,
YAHWEH Himself states plainly that He determines upon whom He shows favor and upon whom He has compassion. He is doing both of these things for Moshe in this specific event. Otherwise, Moshe would not survive a personal exposure to such splendor and majesty.

33.20 However, He said, “You are not able to see My face itself, את
because no human being can see Me and live.”

This verse is placed in bold because it is of extreme importance within Scripture. The so-called 'appearances' of YAHWEH, where people are identified as having 'seen Him', all must be subject to this statement by YAHWEH Himself. If they do not fit with this in some manner - they are FALSE! Moshe was allowed to see "his back side", but not His face. This, essentially, has to be the case in all other portions of Scripture as well. Something other than His face is indeed allowed to be seen - but not His face itself.

33.21 And YAHWEH said, “Behold My place itself! את
And you are to station yourself upon the rock.

There are no verbs in the first line other than "behold". The literal sense suggests YAHWEH is simply telling Moshe to see, to look carefully at, the place of His choosing. He is to station himself there.
And we might also take note of the reference to "the rock" upon which he is to stand. This is an often used metaphor for
The Messiah. Upon what better Rock could one station themselves for the purpose of observing the splendor of YAHWEH Himself?

33.22 And it will be, as My splendor is passing over
that I will place you in the cleft of the rock.
And I will shield you with the palm of My hand over you while I pass over.
33.23 And I will turn away
the palm of My hand itself את
and you will see My backside itself.  את
But My face will not be seen.”

Twice a reference is made to 'pass over', and twice a reference is made to 'the palm of My hand' as that which 'covers' Moshe, protecting him, and covering his sin-nature.
The imagery is stunning!
Shielded by the hand of YAHWEH Himself! Sheltered within The Rock. The palm of the hand, rather than the hand itself, which is the normal reference to hand found in these passages.
The palm -  that was pierced….????
The Rock - that covers our sin-nature????
The passing over of our sin-debt????

Exodus 34.28-30:  And he was there, with YAHWEH, forty days and forty nights.
He ate no bread and he drank no water.
And He wrote on the tablets
the words themselves את of the covenant, The Ten Words.

Please take note that it is The Ten Words, NOT The Ten Commandments. Torah does not give commandments, it gives instructions. The use of 'commandments' does not agree with the Hebrew text!

34.29 And it was as Moshe was coming down from Mount Sinai.
And the two tablets of The Testimony were in Moshe’s hand
as he was coming down from the mountain.
And Moshe did not know the skin of his face radiated
on account of His speaking to he himself.
 את
34.30 And Aharon and all the children of Yisrael saw Moshe himself. את
And behold!
The skin of his face radiated.
And they were afraid to come near him.

Leviticus 17.10-11:  And any man of the House of Yisrael
or of the sojourners that sojourn in their midst who eats any blood,
then I will set My face against the person who is eating
the blood itselfאת
And I will cut off he himself  את from among his people,
17:11
because the life of the flesh is in the blood!
And I Myself have given it to you upon the slaughter site
to make atonement for your lives,
because the blood makes atonement for life!

This is an extremely important Truth of Scripture.
It is not to be treated with disrespect.

Leviticus 20.3-7:  And I Myself will direct My face itself  את against that man!
And I will cut off
he himself  את from among his people
because from his seed he has given to Molekh
thereby
defiling My Set Apart Place itselfאת
And he defiles My set apart name itselfאת
20:4 And if they hide, the people of the land hide their eyes themselves  את
concerning that man according to his giving from his seed to Molekh
by failing to put to death
he himselfאת
20:5 then I Myself will set My face itself  את
against that man and against his family!
And I will cut off
he himself  את and everyone himself  את
who goes whoring after him
to go whoring after the Molekh from among their people.
20:6 And the life who turns to a necromancer or to wizards to whore after them,
then I will direct
My face itself  את against that person!
And I will cut off
he himself  את from among his people!
20:7 Now you are to be
undefiled
And you are to be set apart because I Myself am
YAHWEH, your Elohim!

Leviticus 26.14-17:  But if you do not listen attentively to Me
and you do not do all these directives themselves, את
26:15 and if according to My rules you reject living
and if My regulations themselves  את your life detests,
thus failing to do all My directives themselvesאת
thus causing your breaking of My covenant itselfאת
26:16 surely I Myself will do this to you.
I will visit upon you panic, emaciation itself, את      (wasting away)
and the burning fever itself את
causing the eyes to fail and weakening the life breath.
You will sow seed for nothing and your enemies will eat it.
26:17 And I will set My face against you!
And you will be smitten in the face of your enemies.
And those hating you will have dominion over you.
And you will flee, but no one will be pursuing
you yourselves! את

Numbers 6.22-27: And YAHWEH spoke to Moshe saying,
6:23 "Speak to Aharon and to his sons saying,
'In this manner you are to bless the Children of Yisra
el.
Say to them,
6:24 "May
YAHWEH bless you and protect you!
6:25 May YAHWEH cause His face to shine upon you and show favor to you!
6:26 May
YAHWEH lift up His face toward you and grant to you shalom!
6:27 And are they to place
My name itself את upon the Children of Yisrael.
And I Myself will bless them."

Deuteronomy 5.1-7:  And Moshe called to all Yisrael.
And he said to them, “Listen attentively, Yisra'el,
to the rules themselves את and to the regulations themselves את
which I am speaking in your ears today!
And you are to teach
they themselvesאת
And you are to protect them, for the sake of doing them!
5.2
YAHWEH, our Elohim, cut a covenant with us at Horeb.
5.3 Not with our forefathers themselves את did YAHWEH cut this covenant itself  את
but with us ourselvesאת we who are here today, everyone alive.
5.4 Face to face YAHWEH spoke with you at the mountain from the midst of the fire…
5.5 I stood between YAHWEH and you at that time
to declare to you
The Word of YAHWEH itself את
because you were afraid on account of the presence of the fire.
And you did not go up onto the mountain.

Note: The first part of this verse forms a parenthetical statement by Moshe, interrupting the flow from the previous verse. The artificial nature of the verse breaks becomes readily apparent in this situation, and it was poorly done in this case.
The last word will be left with verse 6.

saying,
5.6 ‘I am YAHWEH, your Elohim, Who brought you out from the land of Egypt (Mitsraim),
from the house of bondage.

The preceding sets the stage for the presentation of The Ten Words. Traditionally called The Ten Commandments, the following verses contain the words that YAHWEH spoke in the hearing of the children of Yisra'el at Mount Sinai.
Because this translation is different from the traditional texts you may not recognize these as The Ten Words.
Look very carefully at what is stated.

5.7 There is not to be for you other elohim before My face!

Deuteronomy 31.16-18  And YAHWEH said to Moshe,
“Behold!
You are going to lie down with your fathers.
And this people will rise up and commit
adultery
after the elohim of the foreigners of the land
where they are going into it's midst.
And they will abandon Me.
And they will break
My covenant itself את
which I have cut with they themselvesאת
31.17 And My anger will be kindled against them in that day!
And I will abandon them!
And I will hide My
face from them!.
And they will be consumed!
And abundant harms and troubles will come to them!
And it will be said in that day,
‘Is it not because our Elohim is not in our midst
that these
harms have come upon us?’
31.18 And I will hide, I will hide
My face in that day
on account of all the harm which they have done,
because they have turned to other elohim.

Deuteronomy 32.19-20 And YAHWEH saw it!
And He despised it on account of the provocation of His sons and His daughters!
32.20 And He said, ‘I will hide My face from them!
I will see what their end is because they are a generation of perversity,
children in whom is no trustworthiness!

Deuteronomy 34.10:  And no prophet has arisen in Yisrael
since then like Moshe whom YAHWEH knew face to face,

Joshua 5.13-15 And it was as Yahoshua was at Yericho.
And he lifted his eyes.
And he looked.
And behold!
An individual was standing in front of him.
And His sword was pulled out in His hand.
And Yahoshua walked toward him.
And he said to him,
“Are you yourself
את for us or against us?”
5.14 And He said, “No!
Indeed I Myself have now come
as Captain of the Assembly
of YAHWEH!”
And Yahoshua fell down with his face to the ground and prostrated himself.
And he said to him, “What is my Sovereign saying to His servant?”
5.15 And the Captain of the Assembly of
YAHWEH said to Yahoshua,
“Take off your sandal from upon your foot
because the place where
you yourself את are standing is set apart.”
And Yahoshua did so.

(Joshua (Yahoshua) is  virtually the same name as that given to The Messiah, YAHUSHUA. I've chosen to spell it slightly differently for the purpose of distinguishing between the two. In Hebrew they were identical from everything I can determine.)

Note: The preceding Scriptures are provided from Scripture For Seekers. The formatting has been slightly altered for easier presentation on these pages. The “Notes” have been included to help you understand the text and the revisions more completely.

Judges 6.22-24 And Gid'on perceived that he was a messenger of YAHWEH
And Gid'on said, “Alas Sovereign
YAHWEH
because I have seen a messenger of
YAHWEH face to face!”
6.23 And YAHWEH said to him,
“Shalom to you!
Do not be afraid!
You will not die!”
Note: This passage reveals the Hebrew perspective on seeing not only YAHWEH, but any "divine being". They believed that to see such a being meant they would die. How much more they would die if they were to see the very face of YAHWEH Himself. Hence, YAHWEH sends one of His messengers, as an ambassador - speaking as if he is YAHWEH Himself - rather than causing a man to die.
Also, take note of the Hebrew term used here,
shalom. It means far more than "peace". It means total well-being in every aspect of one's being. It is a greeting of great respect indicating a desire for one to prosper in every way.

6.24 And Gid'on built there a slaughter site to YAHWEH
And he called it
YAHWEH Shalom.
To this day it is still in Ophrah of the Abi'ezerites.

Please take note of this. The slaughter site is called "YAHWEH Shalom", NOT the messenger, and not God. This is NOT a "name of God" as many false teachers proclaim. It is a title given to the slaughter site by which this event is to be remembered.

1 Samuel 26.20:  And now do not let my blood
fall to the ground before the face of YAHWEH. Indeed the king of Yisrael
has come out to seek a flea itself את
as when one pursues a partridge in the mountains.”

1 Kings 13.6:  And the king responded.
And he said to the man of The Elohim,
“Please intreat the face of YAHWEH itself, את your Elohim
And intercede on my behalf that my hand will return to me.”
And the man of The Elohim intreated
the face of YAHWEH itselfאת
And the king’s hand returned to him.
And it was as at the beginning.

1 Chronicles 16.7-14:  On that day itself,
then David had given
this at the beginning
to give thanks to YAHWEH
by the hand of Asaph and his kindred:
16:8 "Give thanks to YAHWEH
Call in His name!
Cause His actions to be known among the peoples!
16:9 Sing to Him!
Sing praise to Him!
Speak concerning all His extraordinary acts!
16:10 Give praise on account of  His set apart name!
Let the heart of those seeking YAHWEH rejoice!
16:11 Seek
YAHWEH and His power!
Seek His face continually!
16:12 Remember His extraordinary acts
which He has done,
His signs and the judgments of His mouth,
16:13 seed of Yisra’el, His servant,
children of Ya‛akob, His chosen!
16:14 He Himself is YAHWEH, our Elohim!
His judgments are in all the earth!

2 Chronicles 7.14   and My people who have been called
with My name over them will humble themselves,
and they themselves will pray,
and they will seek My face,
and they will turn back from the badness of their ways,
then I Myself will listen attentively from The Heavens.
And I will forgive their offense.
And I will heal their land itself את.

Note: Be very careful with this verse. It is given specifically to the nation of Yisra’el, and not to anyone else. It’s often taken out of context and people love to try to make it apply to them - but that does not agree with YAHWEH’s Word.

Ezra 9.5 : And at the evening sacrifice I rose up from my heaviness. And having torn my garment and my mantle, I fell upon my knees, and spread out my hands unto YAHWEH, my Elohim, 6 and said, "O my Elohim, I am ashamed and blush to lift up my face to You, my Elohim: for our iniquities are increased over our head, and our violation has grown up unto The Heavens. 7 Since the days of our fathers have we been in a great rebellion unto this day; and for our iniquities have we, our kings, and our priests, been delivered into the hand of the kings of the lands, to the sword, to captivity, and to a spoil, and to confusion of face, as it is this day."

Psalms 30.6-7:  And I myself have said in my security,
“I will not be shaken to eternity!”
30:7 (H 30.8)
YAHWEH, in Your pleasure
You caused strength to stand on my mountain.
You caused Your face to be concealed.
Then I was terrified.

Psalms 31.16:  Cause Your face to shine upon Your servant!
Cause me to be
delivered in Your kindness!

(We, as non-Hebrews, don’t connect with the concept expressed in this verse. The concept is that of ”the shekinah glory”, the cloud by day and the fire by night, that was always with the Children of Yisra’el in the wilderness - and was manifested to them numerous other times as this “shining presence” appeared in The Temple. It is this “shekinah glory” that is referred to here. That “light” represented the very presence of YAHWEH.)

Psalms 34.15-17:  The eyes of YAHWEH are toward the just

34:16 The face of

And
YAHWEH listened attentively.
And He delivered them from all their distresses.

Psalms 41.12-13:   And I myself You will support in my integrity.
And You will cause me to stand before Your face to eternity.

YAHWEH, Elohim of Assemblies,

The
face of YAHWEH is an awesome thing to encounter. If He grants you access into His presence it is typically for the purpose of blessing you. If He hides His face from you the consequences can be dreadfully awful. You have a role to play in which experience you have. It's all based on whether or not you choose willingly to believe in Him and trust in Him - or to reject Him and go your own way. May you make a wise choice.
